Mendota CCSVI Student Receives State Department Scholarship to Study Abroad in Costa Rica – Shaw Local


Sabrina Belmonte, of Mendota, from Illinois Valley Community College, was awarded the highly competitive Gilman Program Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, to help her study abroad in Costa Rica this summer.

The Gilman Program provides scholarships for undergraduate students with limited financial means to pursue college credit or career-oriented international internships.

With Department of State sponsorships, participants may be contacted by U.S. Embassy or Consulate officials to attend diplomatic receptions, presentations on U.S. higher education, and networking opportunities with peers.

Belmonte, a first-year business student, will take a history and intermediate Spanish course. She chose Costa Rica for its culture and to improve her Spanish skills.

“My career goal is to help minorities start their businesses around the world,” Belmonte said. “Between family, friends, CCSVI and now the Gilman scholarship, I can make my dreams come true.”
