1. Explain your specific work with Keys Fire Department.

I am one of the three captains and I am a member of the board of the FD. We are given different tasks or teams to lead in an emergency. We work to produce a positive outcome of the situation. We are split into three teams, rotating monthly to complete tasks to ensure we are ready to respond. As board members, we look after the financial side of the DF, ensuring that we operate efficiently and are good stewards of the funds available for the operation of the DF. We are fortunate to have the support of our community members, who pay fire protection dues with additional revenue from FD sales tax that is split among FDs.

2. Why did you decide to become a firefighter?

One of my best friends, Jeff Haney, was on the VFD. I tracked calls and went to meetings and trainings. I wasn’t able to officially register until I was 18, but I was able to help out while gaining knowledge of how everything works.

3. What do you think is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

When we are able to have a positive effect in a situation through our training or our resources.

4. What is the biggest challenge you face?

Two of the biggest challenges we face are volunteers and finances. Most have jobs that make it difficult to meet during daylight hours. We are grateful for the neighboring FDs during these times. We strive to have the items we need to perform the tasks we may encounter, and the items that protect our staff while they do so. We must budget and plan our financial expenditures prudently, which means waiting for funds to become available.

5. Besides your job, what are some of the other important aspects of your life?

My family and my faith are the most important parts of my life. My wife and daughter support my stay at KVFD. There have been times over the years when I have been called upon at events to answer calls. I do it because one day I might be the one who needs help. I am active in Keys Baptist Church. I try to get involved in the community. I am fortunate to help Keys School with my time in various capacities.
